It’s not about the movie being drop-dead hilarious, it’s about it 1) being COMPLETELY unfaithful to the message of the original book, and 2) the joke I pointed out is particularly insensitive. I HATE jokes about “ugly” people. I understand that they want to make the main characters in everything be pretty and attractive so they’re more easily marketable, but whenever they make an antagonistic character unattractive there’s always going to be some kind of comment on it. The “that’s a woman?” joke is especially bad because it brought to mind trans insensitivity on top of the whole “people aren’t allowed to be unattractive and/or unconventional looking, let’s gawk at them” thing.
